Mud, Dirt and Sweat

The hard, icy ground below my feet crunches with every step I take. Running on the trails in the winter is even more challenging than usual. The deep foot grooves that are carved into the muddy trail are now frozen.

In addition to roots and rocks, the frozen terrain creates a consistent obstacle course. My eyes focus on the trail, preventing me from rolling an ankle.

My mind wanders ahead, preparing my body for other obstacles that may lie ahead. The physical and mental demands actually turn the run into an adventure.

For some, trail running may seem too technical, until they try it. I have introduced several friends to the trails, and they are instantly hooked.

You see, the trail creates a scenic distraction, which not only helps to take your mind off the actual run, especially if it is a long run, but time seems to fly by quicker. There are several other benefits to trail running, and this month we have dedicated much of the editorial content to one of the fastest growing types of events in the area: off-road racing.

Trail running is not the only off-road sport experiencing a surge in participation. Mountain biking, adventure racing and cyclocross events are gaining in popularity.

For those interested in expanding their horizons and trying something a bit more challenging, mixed with adventure and combined with friendly competition, check out David Herpy’s article, “Ready for Adventure?” on page 18. Mike Farley, founder of Cleveland Area Mountain Bike Association, takes the intimidation factor out of riding the dirt trails in his article on page 14.

Triathletes and road runners benefit from trail running, too. Angela Ridgel and Laura Pizmoht discuss these benefits in greater detail in their columns on pages 10 and 12. To help runners,  cyclists and hikers navigate through the off-road terrain, freelance writer Lynne Meyer shares her discoveries of the latest GPS units.

There’s a lot exciting things going on in the community. Turn to page 6 to see what’s happening in the running, cycling and multisport communities.

The April issue is another inaugural issue. For the first time, OS&F will focus on spring and summer marathons. We’ll cover everything from recover and injury prevention to fueling for long distances.
